Friendship of Salem

Friendship of Salem is a reconstruction of a wooden, 171-foot three-masted Salem East Indiaman built in 1797.  At 178 feet in length she is the largest Coast Guard certified, fully rigged and operational sailing vessel to be built in New England in more than a century.   Scarano built her for the National Park Service to the specifications of her designer.

Construction: Cold molded (laminated wood and epoxy) out of douglass fir and oak
Year launched: 1998
Certification:  USCG certified for 35 passengers
Current location: Friendship is part of the National Park Service’s larger exhibit area at Salem Maritime National Historic Site in Salem, Massachusetts.  On special occasions she sails as Essex County’s flagship, visiting ports along the coast to join in maritime festivals and events.
